Kindergarten

End of the year Kinder! I can't believe how much hard work these kindergartners put into their art this last semester! We made dinosaurs that were buried with their favorite things. We painted the background to look like dirt and added a sky. the dinosaur bones were made from white paper. Each kindergartner drew his/her dinosaurs favorite things on a separate piece of paper. We cut them out and glued them on the background. This dinosaur like ice cream, pizza, crayons and balloons.

The mixed media fish we made were colorful and so much fun! We stamped the background with paper towel rolls. The fish we stamped with rectangle stamps, the wrapped string around their fish bodies. The fins were made from paper scraps. the last part of the project was cutting out the seaweed and gluing it to the bottom of the sea.

Hundertwasser Flowers

3rd grade has been talking about realistic and abstract art throughout the year. For this project, we looked at Hundertwasser's abstract flowers and some pictures of realistic flowers and discussed the differences and similarities. the 3rd graders first painted a background using their opposite hand (we got some great shapes and lines!) then we cut out our flowers and used various colors of construction paper to add some depth to the flowers. Overall they turned out great! Lovely flowers, 3rd Grade.

Patterns with Kinder!

We reviewed patterns today in kindergarten. I gave each kid two stamps on their hand... a triangle, square, or circle in blue, red or yellow. I split them into groups and each group had to come up with a pattern using their hands. They could make patterns using colors (blue, yellow, blue, yellow) or shapes (square, circle, square, circle) or both! So much fun!

Fish!

Kindergarten Mixed Media

Is it okay to brag about your student's artwork? I love these fish! The kindergarten classes worked so hard on this project. We created patterns (using the circles) and texture (using the paint and yarn) Then we added fins and used bottle caps to make the eyes stick out. Nice job kindergarten, your fish are fabulous!

Kindergarten Peacocks

Mixed Media

"Miss Winthrop, will you tell us a sad story about a sharpie?"

While making our peacocks, we talked about the correct way to use supplies in the art room. When students don't take care of their supplies, it is a sad story. We talked about the right way to take care of our papers (don't squash or rip them!), the right way to use and put crayons away (nicely in the box!) and how to keep sharpies from drying out (make sure the lid clicks!). Thank goodness for supply safety in the art room!

1stGrade Aboriginal Art

Mixed Media
(Oil pastel and Tempera)

Wow.. The 1st Graders worked so hard on thier Aboriginal pieces! We first looked at aboriginal art from austrialia and they took notes on the designs they liked in the artwork. Then we traced our hands and designed them using our notes. We used q-tips to add a pattern to the background. Finally, each student drew an animal, used oil pastel to add color, then cut it out and glued the whole thing together. The hard work these guys put into thier projects really shows!!

2nd Grade Landscapes with Treehouses

2nd Grade Mixed Media
Foreground, middle ground, background! 2nd grade has been working on landscapes for the past couple weeks. We put details in the foreground and then worked on the middle and background. The final step was to put a tree and tree house in the middle ground. For the writing piece of the project each student wrote a short statement about why they thought artists painted landscapes.

Artists paint landscapes... because they are cool and nice.

...because they are pretty.

...because people love to paint things.

...because they want to be creative.
