4th Grade Chalk Pastel
We stared the project by looking at a few different types of landscapes. Using pencil first, we added a foreground, middle ground and background to our paper. We used black glue to trace the pencil lines. After the glue was dry, students used chalk pastel to color in their expressive landscapes. What a mess! It was worth the mess; this simple landscape project turned out just great!

Rockin' Out in 4th Grade!
My lovely 4th graders went to town on these fabulous instruments! We began the lesson by talking about how different kinds of songs had different types of feelings. A rockin' song wouldn't use calm colors and soft, wavy lines or show a violin, would it? No! An upbeat exciting song might use bright colors and an electric guitar. I showed the kids pictures of instruments and the rest was up to them. These turned out absolutely great!

4th Grade Candy Shop
We studied the artist Wayne Theibaud in this mixed media project. We started with an activity that introduced the class to Pop art and the idea behind the popularity of everyday objects and why artists turned them into art. Each of the 4th graders drew images of candy bars using colored pencil. We talked about layering the colored pencil to give the image more depth and to make it more interesting. We designed our gumball machine next, then cut everything out and pasted it on a black background. The final step was to add another element to our image. We used the bottoms of pop bottles to make the gumball machines 3-D. The even have mini gumballs inside!

Underwater Portraits: Jason De Caires Taylor
5th Grade Mixed Media
4th Grade, these portraits are fantastic! The first class we talked about the artist Jason DeCaires Taylor and how he creates underwater sculptures that serve as artificial reefs and also benefit sea life. Then, we did a background in watercolor. After it was dry, we traced our faces onto a mirror- harder than it looks! We transferred the image onto the watercolor paper and added sea creatures to finish the project.

4th Grade Culture
4th Grade Culture at Stratmoor Hills
Standards: 1.3.b Explore and discuss culturally sensitive themes
2.1. b Participate in critiques which analyze the elements of art
3.1.d Create a work of art based on specific themes of personal interest
Students viewed and discussed street art and how it relates to culture. Then, as a class, we brainstormed words that describe the culture here at Stratmoor Hills Elementary. Students then painted a textured background and placed a skyline over the top. The final step was to write the words to describe our marvelous school over the top of the buildings. The final product gives a simple and accurate description of our school culture at Stratmoor Hills Elementary!

4th Grade Impressionism
The 4th Graders just finished thier project on impressionism. They did a great job! They looked at flowers I set out on the desk and used penicl to make a sketch before they painted. We used q-tips and tempera to finish the piece.
